A Complete POT Campaign from One Specialist Team

A pull-out test (POT) campaign verifies how proposed steel foundations behave in actual site conditions before or during utility-scale PV construction. Subject to the client’s approved procedure, our scope can combine the equipment and personnel normally sourced from several subcontractors.

Foundation testing

  • Vertical pull-out / uplift testing
  • Lateral load testing
  • Compression testing
  • Inclined-load testing where specified
  • Load and displacement monitoring

Field execution

  • Test-pile and trial-profile installation
  • Driveability and ramming trials
  • Auger predrilling and pilot holes
  • Pile extraction and remedial works
  • Traceable field records and POT reporting

Testing is executed to the client, tracker manufacturer or engineer’s approved procedure. Foundation design or certification is included only when expressly defined in the contracted engineering scope.

Real Pull-Out Test Field Experience

BayTex East Africa – Partner Experience: Kibali Mine Solar Project, DRC. The photographs below document genuine construction-stage traction, lateral-load and compression test setups using calibrated measuring equipment, controlled load application and displacement monitoring. Confidential readings and proprietary acceptance criteria are not published.

What the Testing Establishes

POT and pile-load testing provide field data for the tracker supplier, EPC, foundation engineer and geotechnical consultant to assess pile/profile selection, embedment assumptions and construction performance. During each load step, the team records the applied load, holding period and corresponding movement. Pass/fail conclusions are reported only when the client supplies the applicable acceptance criteria.

PV Pile Driveability, Predrilling and Extraction

Driveability trials

Trial piles can document depth, driving time, refusal, difficult ground, deformation, installation observations and the suitability of proposed profiles and embedment depths.

Auger predrilling

Our auger capability supports pilot holes, hard-ground assistance and alternative methods where direct driving encounters refusal.

Pile extraction

The extractor kit supports removal of test, rejected or incorrectly installed piles, replacement works and temporary-foundation removal.

One Mobilisation. One Contractor Team.

Review drawings, test matrix and approved procedure
Mobilise equipment, technicians and HSE documentation
Install test piles and record driving observations
Perform driveability trials and predrill where required
Execute uplift, lateral and compression tests
Record load, holding time and displacement
Extract trial piles where required
Compile photographs, graphs and field observations
Issue the agreed technical POT report

Engineering-Ready POT Reporting

Depending on the client’s specification, reports can include test identification and coordinates, pile profile and embedment, ground and driving observations, equipment and calibration references, test direction, load increments, holding periods, displacement readings, maximum and residual displacement, load-displacement graphs, photographs, supplied acceptance criteria and conclusions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a solar PV pile pull-out test?

A controlled field test applying uplift to a trial foundation pile while recording movement at defined load steps.

Why are pull-out tests required before solar pile installation?

They provide site-specific evidence for foundation validation, pile-profile selection and proposed embedment before production piling.

What does POT mean in solar construction?

POT means Pull-Out Test. A campaign may also include lateral, compression or inclined-load tests.

Who performs solar PV pull-out testing in Uganda?

Santana Construction Uganda, working with BayTex East Africa, provides test-pile installation, PV foundation testing and reporting from Uganda.

Who provides PV pile testing in East Africa?

Our combined team can assess mobilisation to Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC and neighbouring markets.

Can Santana install the test piles before POT?

Yes. One team can install trial piles, record driveability, perform specified tests and extract piles where required.

Can you perform lateral pile load testing?

Yes, when included in the approved procedure and after review of the test arrangement, loads and measuring equipment.

Can you perform compression testing?

Yes, subject to the specification, reaction arrangement, equipment capacity and site conditions.

Can you perform PV pile driveability tests?

Yes. ORTECO trial piling can record profile, target depth, driving time, refusal, deformation and field observations.

What happens if a solar pile encounters refusal?

The refusal is recorded and the approved procedure followed. Where authorised, auger predrilling can assist in difficult ground.

Can you extract test piles?

Yes. Our extractor kit can remove test or rejected piles when included in scope and technically feasible.

Do you provide POT reports?

Yes. Reports can include pile data, equipment, load steps, holding times, displacement readings, photographs, graphs and observations.

Can you follow a tracker manufacturer’s procedure?

Yes, after technical review of drawings, the test matrix, loads, holding periods and acceptance criteria.

Can you mobilise equipment to Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda or DRC?

Yes, subject to logistics, permits, schedule, access and project scope.
